Along with The Brain Based Learning Theory, it is important for us to identify the various learning styles of our students. To accomplish this goal, CLA will implement Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory. Gardner’s theory is based upon the belief that students each possess different types of minds and, therefore, learn and perform in different ways. Gardner has identified a list of seven distinct intelligences through which everyone is able to learn: linguistic, logical-mathematical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, and visual-spatial representation. Gardner believes that individuals differ in the strength of these various intelligences and the ways in which these intelligences are used to solve problems and carry out tasks.
According to the theory of Multiple Intelligences, since children have different learning styles, a more effective learning approach would be to teach subjects and perform assessments in a number of ways according to these different styles. CLA will train all teachers in the multiple intelligences and support them in identifying all students learning styles and teaching to those styles. Students excel when learning is on their level, meaningful, and relevant to their personal lives.
